MEET
CRYSTAL
Crystal grew up in a family that played by the rules and believed in education as the path to getting ahead. Her dad was a union worker in the building trades and her mom worked as a health educator. Through the incredible hard work of many, she attended quality public schools and went on to secure a full academic scholarship. Her hard-won success instilled in her a responsibility to ease the way for others.

Crystal has three kids attending Tigard-Tualatin schools at the high school, middle school, and elementary school levels, making her personally vested in all levels of our school system.
​
Her professional background includes a Psychology degree from the University of California, and a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Management from the University of Oregon. She has served in multiple community-oriented career roles addressing issues in health, mental health, substance abuse prevention, affordable housing, child welfare and the educational system. She has extensive experience using resources to achieve results.
Crystal is bicultural (Latina and White), and bilingual (Spanish). This informs her approach. She grew up with stories about her mom starting school as a terrified 1st grader speaking only Spanish, but by the end of the school year knowing English and going on to be a first-generation college graduate. She knows the system doesn’t always deliver for everyone, but she knows it CAN work.

Crystal also had one ethnically Jewish grandparent who left Kiev to avoid religious persecution. He did not impart his culture, preferring to blend in and enjoy a place of safety without risking further persecution. Yet, she relates sometimes thinking about what aspects of her cultures of origin have been lost over time. Ultimately, she envisions a future where students can feel safe, while keeping their identities close- by supporting multilingualism, by learning their stories throughout history, and by celebrating their most important days.
Cristal creció en una familia en que seguían las reglas y creían que la educación era el camino para salir adelante. Su padre trabajaba en sindicato de construcción y su madre en educación de salud. A través del increíble trabajo duro de munchos, atendió a escuelas públicas de calidad y obtuvo una beca académica completa. Su éxito duramente ganado le inculco la responsabilidad de facilitar el camino de los demás.
Cristal tiene tres hijos que asisten a las escullas de Tigard-Tualatin. Dos en la secundaria y uno en la primaria, haciéndola personalmente investida en todos los niveles de nuestros sistemas escolares.
Su formación profesional incluye un título en psicológica de la universidad de California, y un master en política y gestión publicas se obtuvo en la universidad de Oregón. Cristal se a desempeñado en múltiples roles profesionales orientados a la comunidad en el público. Ha trabajado en múltiples organizaciones orientadas a la comunidad abordar problemas de salud, salud mental, prevención del abuso de sustancias, asequible la vivienda, el bienestar de la infancia y el sistema educativo. Tiene una amplia experiencia en el uso de recursos para lograr resultados.
Cristal es bicultural (latina y blanca) y bilingüe (español). Esto determina su enfoque. Creció con historias sobre su madre que empezó la escuela asustada hablando solo español, pero al final del ano escolar sabiendo ingles y yendo a ser la primera en su familia que graduado en la universidad. Cristal sabe que la sistema no funciona para todos, pero si PUEDE funcionar.
Cristal también tenía un abuelo étnicamente judío que abandono Kiev para evitar la persecución religiosa. No impartió su cultura, prefiriendo mezclarse y disfrutar de un hogar seguro sin arriesgarse a una mayor persecución. Sin embargo, ella se relaciona a veces pensando en que aspectos de sus culturas de origen se han perdido con el tiempo. En última instancia, ella imagina un futuro en que los estudiantes pueden sentirse seguros, mientras mantienen sus identidades cerca, apoyando el multilingüismo, aprendiendo sus historias a lo largo de la historia y celebrando sus días más importantes.
